FIGURES OF SPEECH
WORD USAGE
- Parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition etc.
- Multiple meanings: general - attorney general, the general area, in general, general unrest
- Different levels: Tier 1 words - usual words, Tier 2 words - mature, sophisticated words, Tier 3 words - content specific words Ex. 1. talk 2. discussion 3. thesis
- Tricky Homophones: there, their, they're Ex. They're getting their coats over there.
FIGURES OF SPEECH
- Cultural expressions: "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." "A stitch in time saves nine."
- Idioms: "spill the beans" (to tell a secret)
- Hyperbole or exaggeration: "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!"
- Similes: "like a bull in a china shop"
- Metaphors: "I am a bear in the morning."
- Personification: "The wind whispered in my ear."
